We have known throughout this season how important Violet is to Gilbert, but now we really see their relationship being explored. Violet finally learns that Gilbert is truly gone as she reaches out to talk to Gilbert’s brother, Dietfried.
Interesting contrast between the two brothers at the start of the flashback: while Dietfried looks at the orphan girl as simply a tool, Gilbert pities her. Though forced to take her under her wings. At first the relationship between them is a man and his puppy. Gilbert teaches her how to read and write, among many things. The amulet that she chooses being the color of Gilbert’s eyes is clear symbolism of how she idolizes him.
We even see Claudia before he retired. He recognizes Violet, and you can tell his kindness. Why is he having a girl do what she is doing? Still, he mentions the company that he is working on and is a bit sad knowing Violet will be working under him since we know Gilbert’s fate.
We see that moment that declared Gilbert’s fate. He opened a path for everyone else, but he sacrificed himself to do that, as we know.
