Shiboyugi is definitely one of the unique anime of the 2026 winter season. The anime follows Yuuki Sorimachi who is a death game player. Normally with death games, the protagonist has a goal with the death games that motivates them to win. For Yuuki she doesn’t really have that as her goal is to win 99 games.
One of the biggest strong points of this anime comes from the director, Souta Ueno. He has a type of artistic directing that might remind some people of Monogatari or Madoka Magica from Shaft. It gives the anime a unique vibe in terms of how it does its storytelling. There are some games, like Ghost House and Scrap Building, where this is done very well. While in Golden Bath, there ends up being too much show but not enough that can leave anime-onlies confused.
One factor to it is that, unlike many light novel adaptations into anime, which are faithful. I would not call the Shiboyugi anime a faithful adaptation. The games are rearranged differently than how they are in the light novel. As the games in the light are used to build on top of one another. Now there is a reason Ueno did rearrange this, and it really isn’t apparent until the final game in the anime, which is Candle Woods. So light novel readers expecting a faithful adaptation will not be happy.
The anime uses a lot of anime-original scenes. Which, if you read the novels, elevates the cast because it does give the side characters more depth. Even the artistic direction adds a lot for these characters. These scenes have some parallel on Yuuki as well. So the final episode does well with piecing everything together.
From a production standpoint, the artistic direction isn’t the highest budget. It very much simplifies until it needs to. This is something that you will either love or hate. Though the sound direction is outstanding. It is one of the clearest strengths of this anime.
If you are looking for something different from what you get in a seasonal anime, then Shiboyugi will give you one of the more unique anime experiences. However, it should be noted that it has a particular style, and you might not like it. At the very least, watch episode 1, as that can be an indicator whether you might like it or not.
