Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden – Volume 1

This story follows Nia Liston. In truth the real Nia Liston died and the soul inside of Nia’s body is that of a former hero that craves fighting. Not just fighting, but violence and blood too. With that being said this new Nia is also quite intelligent and self-aware as well. Much like Myne in the book, she is clearly past the mental state of a girl her age. Nia starts the first volume at 4 years old but ends it at 6 years old.

While the volume starts regarding the former Nia’s health over the course of the volume that becomes less relevant. With that being said this current Nia still makes use of the former Nia’s situation. One thing that is nice is that she is grateful to the former Nia having to fight the disease she died from. She is even grateful to Nia’s parents. Despite craving violence she does live her life as Nia. The lack of memories makes you wonder if we will learn more about who Nia was.

The world-building is a big intrigue. It has the typical nobility system. As Nia’s family sits in class 4 of the nobility. Magivision is quite the intriguing concept. Basically it plays out as TV, but it’s cool that it is Nia’s family who invested in it rather than the protagonist herself. It’s clear that Nia is made to be a star in this world as the story takes place. But as the story notes image is so important, so it makes you wonder how Nia will be able to get her crave of violence knowing this.

The one character that leaves the most impression is Nia’s attendate in Lynokis. While it is clear she isn’t up to the strength the new Nia is. It’s interesting that she can shadow Nia without her realizing she was there and even more so to ask to be Nia’s apprentice. The bonus chapter offers some nice characterization on Kynokis. Where she does care for Nia as an older sister. Still it’s notable that she can tell that Nia is no longer the Nia of old or in fact a normal girl.

The first volume is decent in setting things up. Doesn’t leave a strong impression. It’s more so an introduction volume on both Nia and this world where she is bound to leave a mark.
