As Henmi Kazuo takes Sugimoto out of Asirpa’s sight, things get worse with the 7th Division around and, more specifically, Tsurumi. Thankfully, Asirpa makes it stop Henmi from landing a blow and allows Sugimoto to end up facing off against Henmi. Though despite the Repun Kamuy ending up killing Henmi, Sugimoto can recover his skin. This wasn’t a wasted trip for Tsurumi as he learns the connection between Sugimoto and the Ainu. Meanwhile, we have Hijikata watching in the back, and him meeting Asirpa while Shiraishi knows who he is makes for a quite terrifying scene.
On the other spectrum, both Ogata and Nikaidou make their way to the Ainu village. It’s interesting to learn there are those in the 7th Division that will betray Sugimoto. While it is clear that Tanigaki doesn’t aim to betray Tsurumi directly, the men who he was with do. It seems Ogata might have persuaded Nikaidou to betray Tsurumi. The concern now is because he might return to Tsurumi, Ogata is trying to kill Tanigaki. Now how does Tanigaki get his way out of this because the Ainu people getting involved clearly guilts him?
This episode covered chapters 39-44. Lots of ground covered here. It did at least adapt everything it needed to, though the chase to recover Henmi was a bit rushed.
