Golden Kamuy S1 – Episode 1

Golden Kamuy anime is an adaptation of Satoru Noda’s acclaimed manga. The setting is Meiji 37, which is around 1904. First, the focus is on Sachi Sugimoto who served in the Russo-Japanese War. Though we see searching for gold, it appears that it is a request from Toraji to help his blind wife. Though it seems clear he died during the war.

Sugimoto learns from a man that the Ainu were storing gold to fight the Japanese. Though a single man took the gold and killed those Ainu. That man ends up in Abashiri Prison and ends up tattooing the prisoner since that man couldn’t communicate with his allies of the gold. Of course it makes sense to go for this since conventional communication wouldn’t work. Of course searching for gold appeals to Sugimoto as he can help his friend’s wife.

The man who tells the story dies from a bear, and this is where we meet Asirpa who is an Ainu. Of course it is through her that Sugimoto can defeat the bear, but interestingly enough, her father is one of the Ainu killed in the story, which raises her stake in finding the gold. Their partnership is interesting because it is clear that Sugimoto killed tons in the war and Asirpa doesn’t want to do more killing.

Now this episode covered the 2 episodes of the manga, and the anime is a clear downgrade over the manga’s beautiful art, and even the paneling is loose in the anime. CGI usage for the bear and Retar.
