Eren the Southpaw – Review

Work Ethic vs. Talent. It is a common debate. Here we have Koichi Asakura who aims to be a designer whose biggest strength is his work ethic. Eren Yamagishi meanwhile his very gifted in comparison. Alongside this, for both types of people, how do they face getting to their dreams, and how do they approach it?

This anime might start rough, but it really offers a super realistic take on life. Dreams are a complicated thing, and people approach them differently. Through the large cast, we have different representations of how the characters approach their dreams and goals.

One thing that really aids this is how it isn’t going to make these people nice and admirable. Most of the cast are terrible people, but that is how it offers the raw realism that is this show’s strength. In fact, these characters do stupid things and make mistakes. But that is the true appeal of this anime.

Even as someone who hasn’t read the manga, I can tell the pacing can be all over the place. There are some time skips back and forth that happen multiple times in the episode. If this anime were even given an extra, it could really go into further detail for the various characters and expand on them. It still does a solid job, but there is some missed potential here that could make me want to read the manga.

Production-wise, this is a collab between Production IG and SignalMD. Art direction is a little susceptible, but overall it is a good job. Directing and voice direction is definitely a strength.

If you are looking for a unique anime that gives you an adult cast and goes into adult issues regarding dreams. This anime is absolutely worth a watch.
