In this volume we finally see Myne getting on the path to reading and writing. As her being Otto’s apprentice is definitely a decision on his part, but given Myne’s age, it makes sense. One thing that is evident is how much smarter Myne is from the adults and that shows how modern civizlation out does the current fantasy world.

The most difficult obstacle for Myne is her physical condition. That is something that just won’t magically get better. Lutz’s help really comes in clutch because of him; she is able to make it to the gate and eventually into the forest. It was a roller coaster from getting a fever and then the tablets getting washed in the rain, but now Myne has a path for her to push for her. More than likely she should aim to be a merchant given her physical limitations. Though, as always, it’s one step forward and one step back, as the process will not be easy for Myne.
