Sayonara Lara – Episode 12

A beautiful finale. Is it Lara’s fate to hate humanity just like her family? At the very least it is clear that Rowan installed a hatred of humans to the very core. Grace was able to give Lara the opportunity to not have that same hatred that her family has.

One thing is clear from the conversation between Mari and Lisa. Lisa’s hatred of humans doubled down from her time on the surface. The ironic part is that Lisa can see Lara’s heart but not her feelings.

Mari’s line of “You have to get closer” speaks volumes because ever since Lisa found Lara she kept her at a distance. Perhaps it had to do with Lisa’s trauma on the surface and seeing Lara bonding with humans made her detest doing the same. It is stuff like this why it is clear that Mari is the one that Lara thinks first when she thinks of love.

Lara almost made the same decision that she made in episode 1. Killing herself so she doesn’t kill the one she loves. Despite Mari not rejecting her this time. I did love Mari’s line that we are born to love someone. She wants Lara to live.

Then we get Lara’s true love that kills Mari. She rejects the notion of true love. As Lara’s journey she has been pressured to find true love. What is true love? Love isn’t something you can truly define. For Lara she wants to live in a world with Mari.

The ending scene is quite odd of why Is Lara leaving Mari? A big thing for Lara is having to follow what other people tell her to do. With the ending it might be more aimed at Lara exploring her independence. It could also mean there are more issues with the love between a mermaid and a human. Could Lara be leaving Mari because she loves her and there is a risk of her killing her?
