Mononoke – Episode 5

We are getting to learn more of Genkei’s story in this episode. It isn’t surprising that his story wasn’t the whole truth, but it contained a half-truth. He wasn’t scared, but he was selfish and didn’t want to sacrifice himself. Though it was true that his sister loved him so much, she went for him. The feeling of love is a powerful feeling, and there was clear guilt.

What is most interesting is how this ties into Genkei’s story because it may very well be believed that he loved his sister. As such, he lied to himself that he loved her as well. The regret of tricking her so he formed those lies to protect himself. As the term lies can make one ugly, we see how he becomes better looking after he is freed. The story really showcases how strong the power of love, guilt, and regret can be.
