As a reader of the light novel, this episode was decent, as it covered pages 147-220 in the first volume. It covered a lot of ground but did a decent job at that.
As we can see early in the episode, it is clear that Kenta has put in the effort. Which, of course, was an area of concern for Kazuki. Of course we are introduced to Atomu’s group basically bullying Kenta because Saku befriended him. Of course this kind of puts the point from Kenta that more popular groups do put down his type of people.

Now there is where Saku & Kenta’s different views feel awkward. As Saku tells Kenta to ignore that, it is something that Kenta can’t simply do as well. You also add the soccer match, as Kenta is still insecure about not doing well, while Saku just wants to have a good time. Though Saku performing well does put a bad image in Saku’s mind. To worsen it, he jokingly discussed how poorly Kenta played and took it the wrong way. Of course we know Saku meant no ill will about it, and Yuuko’s point is 100% right. Sadly, Saku is still at fault for not understanding Kenta’s side. Though you can tell Saku still cares for Kenta to do well.

Now the issue of the pacing, having read the novel, feels more evident in Haru & Saku’s conversation regarding Kenta. By cutting Kenta’s progress in improving, this concern feels like it comes out of left field compared to the novel, where it felt more natural. Still, it was good to get characterization out of Saku as he is helping Kenta. How much is on him if Kenta fails? Of course Haru’s answer is, point is the coach is supposed to guide the player. If the coach takes all the responsibility for the player, that undermines the player’s effort. Of course Saku knows the amount of effort Kenta has put in.
