This special episode has Violet writing a letter for opera singer Irma Felice. Though writing this letter turns out to be quite the challenge for Violet, as it is supposed to aid in Irma’s performance. As such, she hits a roadblock early in the episode.

Irma’s key words are “A love letter that, when read, makes every woman yearn and every man’s heart pound.” This is key to what Irma wants. To understand what Irma wants, we learn that her lover did not make it back after the war. In a way much like Violet, who hasn’t seen Gilbert since the war ended.

The key to what Irma wants is the letters that were supposed to be sent to the men in the war but never made it to the destination. As you have women who had their husbands returning after the war, they can express who that loneliness was. While people like Irma, who lost their husband, can empathize with that letter since they know how it feels. For men, imagine being separated from your loved one; it is quite notable. Something that resonates with all women and men in love.

There is no doubt there is much for Violet to learn from this job. How letters can express feelings on their own and how reading them can draw emotions from us.
