Fullmetal Alchemist – Volume 1

As the name of the series suggests, one of the main things in this series is alchemy. As with alchemy, it is about creation through various means. The big principle that is illustrated in this manga is the purpose of equivalent exchange. You can’t create something without offering something equivalent in return. In the first 2 chapters, it highlights the argument against scamming people who believe in God by using alchemy. It really stresses the point that miracles can be possible with alchemy.

Still, sometimes believing in miracles can lead to one’s demise. For both Ed & Al, they sought to bring back their mother, and for two kids, you can understand why they would want that. Al lost most of his body, while Ed lost his leg. In fact, Ed had to give up his arm to get Al’s soul back. This is more in line with the danger of what alchemy can bring if you aren’t careful. At this point for the brothers, the goal is to get back Al’s body and Ed’s arm and leg. At this point they shouldn’t bite off more than they can chew. The priest was able to get away from giving equivalent due to the Philosopher’s Stone. Though it turns out to be a fake. At the very least it is clear that getting those is tied to the brother’s goals.

Curious to learn more about the military because, as seen in chapter 3, the people seem to suffer from people who take advantage of their post. A big point is that State Alchemists like Ed need to be there to help the people, which he does a good job of by giving the mining rights back to the citizens.

The incident at the train does show the connection Ed has with the military. It seems Ed is only a state alchemist, while Colonel Roy Mustang is also one, as he is the Flame Alchemist. Curious to see the difference in skill between him and Ed. As well as how he uses Flames as opposed to Ed, who operates with Metal.
