Golden Kamuy S4 – Review

Golden Kamuy is back for Season 4. Honestly, if you made it this far, you are probably really enjoying the story. To simply put it, if you loved the series so far, you will love this season.

Season 3 concluded with the emotional reunion of Asirpa and Sugimoto. S4 mostly picks up where that left off. Given the time that these two partners have been away, the season highlights the very changes they’ve been through, which is done very well.

The season itself is more of a buildup season that sets up for the final arc. One of the arcs regarding Hijikata’s group happened in the middle of Season 3 and thus was pushed off to next season. We also have the introduction of “Boutarou the Pirate”, Mokutarou Kikuta & Rikimatsu Ariko who all have key new roles.

Still, despite these additions, the season continues to excel in further developing its cast, as Tsurumi & Koito were fleshed out extremely well. We even got Sugimoto’s backstory finally in the anime, which has been long overdue.

On the technical side of this anime, the sound direction and voice direction are as good as they have ever been. Animation, much like in S4, is super solid. With all that being said, I only rate it an 8 because, like I said, it is a build-up season. Next up is the final season, and that is where we will see if the buildup done in this season provides the necessary payoff.
