Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End – Episode 15

This episode really showed Sein’s worth to the party as we learned more about curses. As Frieren describes it, you can equate it to debuffs in a JRPG. As turning into stone & sleep are the examples Frieren illustrates. It’s interesting to learn the magic of humanity differs from the magic of the goddess. The Goddess Magic is in the holy scriptures and seems only available to men of the cloth like Heiter & Sein. Interestingly enough, humanity’s magic has been learned and evolved from demon magic, but not from the goddess. I can only assume that they don’t have the consent to learn & study the Goddess Magic. While with Demon Magic, obviously they are treated as an evil race, so no consent is required for studying that magic.

As Sein fights the big flower responsible for the curse, he is by himself and can’t beat it on his own. I think the use of the flashback where, like Sein, Heiter didn’t understand what was going on in Frieren’s mind. Sometimes you just need to trust your teammates to have your back and believe what they say. Like Heiter in the past, we see Sein put his trust in Frieren and be rewarded.

The 2nd half of the episode was a nice outlook for Stark because the party gets the task of having Stark fill in for the dead son. I like how the relationship between Stark & Eisen is similar to Lord Orden and his fallen son. Their last exchange was an argument, and of course Lord Orden has only regrets. Though Stark had a similar circumstance to Wirt and doesn’t want to leave regrets. Plus, I like how Stark reminds Lord Orden he has his other son, and he reminds Stark of himself when he was younger. While losing Wirt hurt, he can’t forget you have another son. It wouldn’t be fair for Stark to bypass him just to replace Wirt.

Well-adapted episode that adapts chapters 31+32. Really nice animation for both the Flower Fight and the ballroom dance scene between Fern & Stark.
