This series is set in a world where only witches can use magic. Which is a logical way to differentiate who can use magic and who can’t. That is the simple way magic works in many fantasy series. However, as Coco finds out, it is not about having aptitude for magic but having knowledge of magic. The idea that magic is cast but drawn is a very intriguing approach to the story.
The book. That Coco received from so long ago was one that listed forbidden spells. As such, magic in this world is more about creating tools that use magic than about magic that affects the body. The only one allowed is to erase minds because that would allow those who shouldn’t use magic because of its dangerousness. Granted, being allowed is a bit worrying because in the wrong hands it could be so dangerous.
Coco’s roommate Agott is definitely one that isn’t too friendly to her. It is not a complete surprise since Coco just arrived and is now learning magic, while Agott studied magic her whole life. While it is unfair that she pushed Coco to take the test, of course, in her mind, Coco isn’t one of them. Despite things looking awful for Coco, it is impressive how she uses her experience as an artisan to get her to pass the exam. Essentially, combining magic with creating physical tools gives a new way to create magical tools, and the potential could be so high for Coco.
No doubt that Coco being their first lead into forbidden magic, there is no doubt why Qifrey didn’t want to lose this chance. Still, forbidden magic took Coco’s mother away, but there seem to be other motives for Qifrey. Still, how he manages the girls going forward will be important
One very impressive part of this manga is the worldbuilding it goes into already. It goes into depth on how witches cast spells. To add moreover, you have the elements, and even the direction drawn can be manipulated. Art is something if you can picture it, you can draw it. So here it really sells how magic is just waiting to be discovered.
Though it appears that the man who gave Coco the forbidden magic book is back at it. What about Coco has caught his attention? To add the comment of her being their only hope. What does that mean exactly?
