Violet Evergarden – Episode 10

In this episode we have Violet fulfilling a new job by making a letter for Clara Magnolia. Though unlike Violet’s other jobs, the purpose of this episode was less about how to make the letter, as the perspective of this episode was through Clara’s daughter Ann. We see her mother is the only family member she has left. With Clara’s days being numbered, you can only feel bad for Ann because her living in that mansion alone just feels depressing.

When it gets mentioned by Ann that her father is dead, it becomes clear that the letters that Clara is making are for Ann. One key theme in this story is how Auto Memory Dolls convey a person’s emotions in a letter. However, most of the letters made by Violet have been made with the present in mind, but never the future. For Clara, she still wanted to write to her daughter how much she loved her, but her death was inbound. The letters, though, allow her to still communicate with her daughter even if she is dead. It conveys the meaning of how these birthday letters convey so much emotion for Ann. It feels like her mother is watching over her.

The final scene is really well done in showcasing more of Violet’s emotional growth. We first see Violet able to empathize with the characters in Oscar’s story, but here it takes it to another level. She only feels pain knowing that Ann will live alone, but as Cattleya mentions, the letters that Ann will receive for 50 birthdays will convey so much meaning.
