The Darwin Incident – Volume 4

The shock of Charlie losing his foster parents is immense. Though it is quite interesting to see how much Phil has changed in a short amount of time. Seeing Charlie’s kindness was enough to make him realize he is foolish. More than likely his final conversation with Bert had an effect. Unlike so many of the animal activists, Bert was much more reasonable. Maybe hoping that his faith in humanity even after his death had merit. Still, for both him and his wife to take in Charlie says something. Though you do wonder what happened to their daughter and that she is dead. His wife is an oddball so far, and her bringing Charlie to the supermarket felt like a bit more than just getting fresh air.

Linares is quite the interesting character. She knows the facts surrounding Charlie and is a big help for him. Though her thoughts on animals getting rights are a bit odd. Animals live in their own world. Phil’s logic is more sound in that Charlie is half human. He has the capability to communicate and blend into human society. The most common animal does not have that capability. Hell, do animals even want to have human rights?

An interesting reveal was that Lucy came from the birth of a sperm donor. Though the personality of Lucy’s mother feels increasingly concerning. Of course the topic of Charlie asking Lucy if he likes her is an interesting boundary that this series crosses. I mean, Charlie is half human, but of course people look at what they see on the outside. Which makes the situation more awkward than it normally would. It is more interesting when Charlie talks about revenge and it is illogical. Of course revenge won’t bring back his foster parents. Though it is funny that Charlie switches his reasoning so that having revenge means no one would harm their loved ones. Once again, this is Charlie’s massive logical mindset missing human acting out of emotional impulse. Though there are hints that a bit of emotional impulse is in there, as he first stated, he wants revenge.

Eva, Charlie’s birth mother, is dying but leaves the information that there was another child. Charlie’s younger brother is named Omelas, and I think it is safe to assume that he is also half human and half chimpanzee. We also learned that he killed Charlie’s foster parents. It seems clear he could be the reason why the activists are invested in securing Charlie as their leader. Although he does seem jealous. Rivera even mentions Omeals’s voice. Was he a failed experiment or birth?
