The Darwin Incident – Volume 1

The star of this new series is Charlie, who is half human and half chimpanzee. Essentially he gets called a humanzee. Essentially, Charlie is a case of heterosis where he performs better than either his human or chimpanzee side. When you just hear it like that, it is clear why people are afraid of Charlie. Then you add the incident when Charlie was 5, where he sent 7 police officers to the hospital. Still, considering Charlie was only 5, what the reality of the situation was is difficult to tell. The most interesting thing about Charlie is how he thinks. He is so smart that he thinks things through logically. Though because he was shut in with his adopted parents, he was isolated, so it is no wonder that when he talks to Lucy, there is a huge gap in him understanding how humans behave. Imagine a shut-in person, but now it is a super strong humanzee, as the manga calls him.

Now the big thing is the role that the animal activists play. Essentially the manga calls it vegans vs. meat eaters. The way it mostly plays out, it is a case where both sides are in the wrong. As we see, the vegan side was responsible for an explosion that killed a child. It does lead to a point: the meat-eater side is less in the wrong as they are doing things they have always done. Though them blaming Charlie because he is a vegan and half animal is where they are in the wrong too. In fact, Charlie’s adopted parents probably say it best. They have their beliefs, and they know that even being vegan won’t change the abuse animals go through in cases like making crops. The real point is that it isn’t all or nothing, but the goal should be to limit the animal cruelty as much as you can.

Max in particular seems to be the closest we have to an antagonist so far. He is dead set on getting Charlie on his side by any means. Though he looks at beings as animals or humans. Animals he needs to protect, and humans can just be killed. As he mentions, make sure Charlie isn’t hurt. Though the act of hurting those that Charlie cares for just shows he is going about it the wrong way. Even his attempts at making Charlie isolate him by saying he is the only humanzee. Charlie’s answer is that every individual is unique. Shows that Charlie doesn’t have the emotional state that you see in humans. Still, Max gets out and seems to put Charlie in a rough spot. Though once again any human can be sacrificed for his goals. Even the ones on his own side. I think that just shows how scary Max can be because he very well can be unpredictable.
