It shouldn’t be a surprise for Tsurumi to pick up on what Kikuta. One thing that is interesting is how similar Sugimoto and Kikuta are. Sugimoto with Toraji and Kikuta with his brother and the guilt. For Sugimoto it should have been him who died, while Kikuta can only blame himself. Funny enough, the advice Sugimoto gives Kikuta is stuff that, over the course of the series, is stuff that would be good advice for himself.

So now we know that the reason Usami rushed out when he did was because he also learned that Kikuta was a spy. Kikuta is betting on Sugimoto to beat Tsurumi. It must have been a shock to learn who that homeless brat became. It is sad that he died because their reunion was way too short-lived.

The gold being located in Fort Goryoukaku is interesting because this is the incident where Koito was kidnapped. Which was shown in the flashback of S4. It is funny that the gold was underneath Tsurumi this whole time. The bad news is Tsurumi already cracked the code too, and he is wasting no time. Well, our side has to get rolling to prepare for Tsurumi’s arrival.

Chapters 278-282 were adapted as well as most of chapter 283. I will assume the next episode will start with the end of chapter 283.
- While there was a lot in this episode, nothing was skipped. From a production aspect, it was the weakest episode so far. I think it’s fine given where they need to end this cour.
- This leaves us with 17 chapters in 4 episodes, which leaves us in a great position for a movie length finale to finish the adaptation.
