This episode gave a bigger focus on the Tachikoma in terms of who they are. For most of the cast, we know that each of them has a specific Ghost in their Shell. While for the Tachikoma it is different because they have fewer qualities that make them unique, as their shell isn’t the same. The real question is, are each Tachikoma unique, or is there one server booting to all the Tachikoma? It is the latter, and it makes sense, as the Tachikoma aren’t too unique from each other because they feel like they do have a ghost, given their curiosity. Here, instead of a 1:1 relationship from ghost to shell, we have a 1-to-many relationship with the Tachikoma sharing the same ghost.

Sadly for their creator, Dr. Asuda, who wanted to go to a place that would appreciate his work, he wasn’t allowed to do that. Kind of the point that when you sell yourself to the government, it shouldn’t be something to be done halfheartedly. Sadly, much like Section 9, he isn’t free—kind of ironic for them to send him to a fate that isn’t too different from their own.
