Fullmetal Alchemist – Volume 20

Quite the clever trick by Al’s group; by baiting Envy, they were able to capture him. The theme of suffering only causes further suffering; doing good can motivate others to do good. As Marcoh sees Winry even willing to help someone like Scar, it only motivates him to think, What can I do?. After all, he created the philosopher’s stone, so he should know how to take care of them. It’s very impressive that they capture Envy.

Surprisingly, Scar gives the captured Envy to Mei so he can give it to the emperor. His point that she shouldn’t be involved with their countries affairs is more than valid. Still, Mei feels guilty of leaving because she has come to grow fond of them. I think it is clear that her relationship with her family back home might not be the best. Envy does give Mei the hint of the truth of immortality, but she just feels guilty of leaving, which shows she is truly a kid.

The plan from Central is to transform the souls of the humans of those lands into those dolls that Olivier sees. Quite the sickening plan they have on their hands. Alex can still see that his older sister isn’t on Central’s side, given how she pushes the family she is not close to to leave the country. One thing is clear: Oliver getting close to Bradley and company is only going to get more and more dangerous.

It’s good to see Ed making a recovery and him meeting back up with Lin/Greed. Furthermore, it’s interesting to learn that for each of the homunculi’s deadly sins, they carry the memories of their previous iteration. Greed carries the memories of the chimera that served under him, which gives Lin a chance to be in control for long enough. Once again, Greed breaks off from the homunculus group, and Ed is smart to get his cooperation. For one, he knows he and Lin are allies. He just has to cater to Greed, who is, as expected, very greedy.

It is quite lucky that Al met Hohenheim before Ed because Ed would lose his cool. Hohenheim truly cares for his kids, and Al trusting him made his day. It is clear that the Homunculus is waiting for the Day of Reckoning, but what exactly happens that they are willing to wait until then?
