Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End – Episode 17

It’s very interesting that the episode where it switches the OP is the one where Sein says farewell. Still, it is no surprise he opts to do this since, unlike Frieren, Fern & Stark, he has his own goal. Though you can tell Sein was happy that they got snowed in. The irony is that even with that, they are doing their usual things.

We get Sein for one last time sorting out Fern & Stark’s argument. Another case of Stark being too much of a kid and Fern having trouble communicating her feelings. As Stark putting pressure on her shoulder is something you can understand from Fern’s side. Still, no doubt they are likely to have an argument again, and so Frieren needs to be able to handle it. I love how low-key the farewell with Sein is. Sein is an adult, and Frieren knows he can take care of himself. Of course, after spending time with the 3 of them for so long, Sein’s comment of how quiet it feels really showed he had a great time traveling with Frieren and company.

It’s funny that after Sein leaves, Fern gets sick. Still, it was a good case to show that in terms of the very basics of the goddess magic, Frieren can handle some things. I like this episode to highlight Frieren & Fern’s relationship. Frieren isn’t good with emotions, but she knows if she doesn’t know what to do to help Fern, she can at least hold her hand much like Himmel did in the flashback.

It’s funny how in this episode we have both Sein & Fern mentioning how Frieren treats them like a kid. Though with Sein it was something he would comment about and not much else. With Fern, Frieren is her main female role model growing up, and it is natural for Frieren to always look at Fern as a kid. Of course every daughter would want their mom to stop treating them like a child at times. But it more so shows how much Frieren loves Fern.

This episode adapted chapters 35 and 36. There is not much to comment on; a few of the no-dialogue scenes showcasing the music were a bit extended. Also, to add, they were outside in the manga when Stark noticed Fern got sick. While in the anime they were in what seems like under a mountain or in a cave.
