Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End – Episode 30

Man, Hero of the South is somebody alright. It’s interesting how your name in history is remembered for what you did. For the Hero of the South, he defeated 3 members of the 7 Sages of Destruction and also supposedly killed Schlacht as they both went down. While Himmel’s party only killed 2 of them. Granted, Himmel’s party defeating the Demon King was probably the more iconic victory.

Still, it is difficult to argue that the Hero of the South was bluffing about seeing the future. As his point, the Young Hero Himmel will recruit Frieren and they will defeat the Demon King. Still, both Flamme & Hero of the South had that conviction about what Frieren would accomplish. Still, it is good to know that the Hero of the South is not forgotten despite not being the one who beat the Demon King.

It’s quite funny for Frieren to be rushing out of town as soon as she entered. Well, the noble family is asking her to get back the Demon Sword, just like they requested from Himmel and his party. Following in the steps of Himmel, Frieren can’t deny the request by them. After all, Himmel worked hard to get that sword back, and he wouldn’t turn down someone in need.

As usual, Demon is manipulating humans to kill and eat them. At times like this, it is good to remember why Frieren is always on guard regarding them. Still, the demon mentioned she killed the humans because she needed to eat them to survive. When in reality, as Frieren pointed out, she could eat other things other than humans. Of course, humans could eat things other than beef, pork, or chicken, but that would enter an entire discussion altogether. The main point is that demons don’t care about their logic as long as it can be manipulated to fit with what they want. The fight, while short, was very well animated.

The final scene in the carriage is interesting because you would wonder why these humans have a demon sword. It’s less about wanting the power of the sword than about keeping it from demon hands. Of course the nobles could make the request in a more polite manner. Still, they hold on to it to protect the people of their town. As we recall from Flamme from S1, demons love to showcase their mana because they take great pride in their power. So if the demons possessed this sword, they would do what that demon woman caused.

This episode adapted chapters 63 & 64.

  • The puppet show featuring the Hero of the South is extended off just 2 panels in the manga. With that also, we had the scene of Hero of the South defeating Schlacht as the words mention that he will clear a path for Himmel.
  • The fight between the Sword Demon was notably extended from the manga, which was only 7 panels in there.
  • The scene in the carriage at the end of the episode is anime original, and it is a great scene to illustrate why the nobles are so set on keeping possession of the sword.
