Ascendance of a Bookworm: I’ll Do Anything to Become a Librarian! Part 2 – I’ll Even Join the Temple to Read Books! – Volume 1

The series now moves onto Part 2 with Myne joining the temple. Sadly, things don’t go easier for Myne, as there is a disconnect between nobles and commoners in society. Normally only nobles are accepted as blue priests. To add even more, her being accepted has her not liked by the High Bishop, to say the least. To even add more to the issues, Myne is truly unaware how a noble should act. These are all issues that have been clear to happen a mile away.

As we are introduced to Myne’s attendants. Fran, Delia, and Gil. As much good as Benno did teaching Myne how to be a merchant, these things don’t translate well. Most in particular with Gil because Myne thinks that you put in the effort to be rewarded. Granted, Gil sees nothing from Myne that would indicate for Gil to believe she understands. It is a good showcase of the flaws of both of them. Myne having tunnel vision with her books and Gil being a problem child. Delia is the weird case where she is a spy from the High Bishop but has made it clear she is a spy, which shows she is a kid. At least the relationship between Gil and Myne looks to be improving at the end of the volume.

The real shine of the volume is the focus on Fran. Who previously was under the High Priest. We get the sense with the High Priest that he isn’t very expressive. Fran thought he was being demoted when, in reality, him getting appointed to Myne was because he trusted him. After giving Myne a torn relationship with the High Bishop and then adding her health issues, she needs someone she can count on.

As both Benno and Lutz point to Fran, they really need to pay attention to Myne, as her health issues are a major issue. Not to mention Myne can self-inflict her own wounds. So far he looks like the one dependable attendant for Myne.

As mentioned, the big focus of the volume is nobles in society. For instance, just being in temple clothes outside the temple is a big no. Even wearing noble clothes will be an issue for Myne. It will be curious how much Myne needs to understand if she truly aims to be a Blue Apprentice Shrine Maiden.
