Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26 – Mermaid Rhapsody

The 5th episode among the Fujimoto short stories serves a romance between a human and a mermaid. It was interesting to learn that Toshihide’s mom was a mermaid who he listened to playing the piano. So he can play the piano that is underwater. This is where he meets a mermaid named Shiju, who fell in love with him playing the piano. We can see them getting closer and clearly falling in love.

Though this love is a forbidden love, as mermaids are known to eat humans. Reality comes when Shiju senses a shark coming after Toshihide. Sadly, after being injured by the shark, Toshihide’s human blood enhances Shiju’s mermaid senses, and she attacks Toshihide. This executes the issues of mermaids and humans. Where we see even more with the humans and mermaids arguing. There are two specifics that should live separately from each other.

Toshihide’s father’s advice was sound to him. As he loved his mermaid, who was also a mermaid. While the danger of being with a mermaid was valid and understood, he still sought to be with Toshihide’s mother. The idea is that it is better to go after your love than to live in regret later about it. Though where the episode really shines is how Toshihide’s music affects the other mermaids. As much like Shiju, their eyes are opened in a way that shows them the beauty of humans. Which can be considered the species of humans and mermaids coming together with a beautiful ending scene. A happy ending where the forbidden love of Shiju and Toshihide ends on a happy note.
