You and I Are Polar Opposites S1 – Review

“You & I Are Polar Opposites” is an example of a simple premise with good execution. In a lot of RomComs you have a clear lead couple. While Tani and Suzuki are definitely that for this show. This show takes time for potential couples. With three different potential romances, each offering something different.

With Suzuki and Tani have what we call the Reiwa Romance. There isn’t much build-up from the premise of the series. The draw here is you start getting into the actual relationship starting in episode 2. Admittedly, it’s much slower-paced than the other 2 potential couples since the build-up isn’t there. Though it offers something you don’t receive too much in romance anime, where we see how the relationship affects the two of them. We see how Tani’s stoic and logical nature changes with his feelings. While for Suzuki, how much she cares for Tani compared to her friends.

With Nishi and Yamada you get more of the classic introvert-popular kid romance. What’s actually really nice here is that the introverted female and popular guy are normally seen in a lot of shoujo works, but this being a shounen work gives it fresh air. The Polar Opposites theme works well because you can tell how these two being so polar opposite makes them perfect for each other.

Lastly we have the dynamic of Taira and Azuma which is definitely the most interesting of these three. The writing here is most similar to the creator’s other series, “The Ramparts of Ice”. Where it dives deeper into the issues these two have. The polar opposites theme really is used here because outside Taira caring too much of what people think of him and Azuma not caring what people think of her, it isn’t used much. It’s much more a deep dive into thesee two indivudally. Which is what makes this RomCom stand out from a lot of the others.

Production-wise, Lapin Track has given this anime as ideal as an adaptation that you can ask for as a manga reader. Animation, art direction, sound direction, and voice direction are all 10/10 here. Scenes get extended from the manga very well. If you love RomComs this is absolutely a must-watch. Hell, even if you have a slight interest in the genre, I would argue it is a must-watch.
