Violet Evergarden – Episode 9

As the last episode had Violet learning the news that Gilbert is truly gone. Now this episode has Violet searching those feelings as it hits her hard. Probably harder than if she knew at the start of the series. One thing to note of Claudia’s hands-off approach for letting Violet soak up this. He knows that now Violet has her own purpose and preaching that won’t stop the pain that Violet is feeling. He told Violet she would feel the burns eventually.

The start that gets Violet going is when she receives a letter from Iris and Erica. They express their feelings for Violet while still giving her time to express. This in turn brings Violet into contact with Roland, who is delivering the lost letters. This is important because it reminds Violet that the emotions she has understood aren’t all bad. As an Auto Memory Doll, she can provide a vast amount of emotions in others lives.

The further proof of this is we see various characters across the episodes, and things have progressed for them thanks to Violet. She was able to give them the courage to move forward with the emotions they are dealing with. As such, an Auto Memory Doll isn’t just the ability to express someone’s emotions in a letter; it also lets them understand their emotions.

Claudia no doubt feels guilt because he knows eventually Violet will realize her pain. For many people, we don’t realize the pain is there until later on. For we might have been suffering. Violet herself was numb to her emotions because she didn’t understand those emotions.

He raises an important aspect of humans: that we can’t erase the past. It would be unfair for any human, barring some extra case, that they don’t deserve to live because of what they have done. The ones Violet killed, they can’t be brought back, but she was used as a tool in war, and she shouldn’t have to feel responsible. But it is human nature to feel responsible for guilt even if you didn’t have knowledge. For Violet, she can make amends, and the best decision that Claudia pushed for was for Violet to become an Auto Memory Doll because it allowed Violet to understand emotions but also have something to amend her actions in the past.

The scene at the end where it parallels Gilbert giving her the name Violet. It is at that moment that she understands and lives up to that name. Violet is just a caring and thoughtful person, and for her, she aims to help those in her duty as an Auto Memory Doll.
