Violet Evergarden – Episode 4

This episode shifted the focus away from Violet and to Iris. As she received a commission from her hometown of Kazalli. With Iris’s injury, Violet joined her. Though the offer was not what Iris expected. Her mom brought her home because she figured she should settle down and be married. As Iris’s birthday was coming up.

The real friction is when a member on the guest list, Eamonn Walker, ends up at the party. As it turns out, Iris confessed to him, but he rejected her. As Violet is seeking to learn what the words I love you mean, we see Iris is the one who said those words.

This episode does a good job at showing that Violet is still figuring out how to understand emotions. Neither Luculia nor Iris spoke about what was on their mind, but for different reasons. Luculia couldn’t get the words to come out, while Iris refused to express herself because just saying it hurts. So her mistake in telling her family of the rejection is understandable. At least Iris, before she left, did apologize for her behavior because leaving the bridges burned is never a good idea.

At the end we learn the reason for Iris’s name. We also get a flashback to when Gilbert gives Violet her name. Only time will tell how she grows into that.
