This volume is the first that really brought into the question, what is the dungeon? Senshi has elaborated before, but even specifying more about the dungeon ecosystem. There needs to be balance. Essentially, the dungeon itself is much like nature, but it is not created from the world itself. It was created by magic, and it is powered by magic. This is an interesting concept. In fact, Marcille was studying magic to create the dungeon. Although it is interesting how close she and Falin are, of course Falin acts much like her brother Laios.
Though how death is treated in the dungeon is rather interesting. We see that people are getting resurrected back to life. In fact, Mr. Tansu uses that fact for his survival, as he can resurrect people who have fallen in the dungeon. The fact that the dungeon binds the souls to the person even through death is interesting and very disturbing. Imagine dying multiple times, which could really hamper an individual.
It was nice to see Namari who was part of the party before splitting ways. Her logic for leaving makes sense, as everyone has their own individual needs. It is clear she cares for Falin, but she doesn’t have the luxury Marcille does in putting all her resources in saving Falin. A lot of Chilchuck’s logic holds up. Though it is difficult to wonder if part of him is honoring Falin for hiring him.
Dungeon food has been a core aspect of the series, and it is used when Marcille loses the majority of her mana. In many JRPGs, recovering your mana is a simple concept. The idea of drinking a water spirit called the Undine is bizarre, but the journey and what the group has been eating are bizarre. To add even more to the bizarreness, Senshi’s pot is made up of adamant, which is powerful enough to shatter dragon bones and defend against a dragon’s fangs. I’m curious if that will play a part soon.
Now the group is slowly making its way to the Orc Village, where the Red Dragon should be nearby. Hopefully this means they can save Falin. Also, Chilchuck understands how traps work, and using that against monsters like the giant frogs really showcases his strength.
