Delicious in Dungeon – Volume 1

This manga starts with quite the drastic entrance where Laios’s little sister Falin gets eaten by the Red Dragon. Well, the goal of the party, minus 2 of its members, is to rescue Falin before she gets digested within the Red Dragon. One thing that is clear from the start is this story is an adventure and a comedy at its core. Which works to its strength. The tone is much more lighthearted, pointing fun at what monsters Laios wants to eat next. Of course he aims to rescue his sister, but the tone the manga is going for is much more lighthearted. A series that is about the adventure rather than the destination.

There are two core pieces of this series, and that is how this is a fantasy series but also a gourmet series. This can be shown right away where Senshi knows the ins and outs of the dungeon, but even mentions some core concepts of eating healthy and whatnot. The curious thing is, how does he know so much?

In terms of fantasy, one thing is clear: how it makes up a party with Laios, Senshi, Marcille & Chilchuck. As the first volume is more comedic and worldbuilding-centric, there are fewer opportunities for Marcille to prove herself. Which is natural, but the others don’t want to waste her strength. One favorite chapter is when Senshi & Chilchuck team up to cook. As Senshi uses the traps that Chilchuck finds to cook. An example of good teamwork is that they are part of the same party.

Though one thing quite interesting is that the mollusk essentially creates the living armor. They are a creature that very much mimics human behavior. Essentially, a host of them host the armor, and they can mimic human behavior and have the same weaknesses as well. We do see with the Basilisk being a rooster and snake host. I do like how, despite being a joint of two creatures, it is only classified as one. The main issue is communicating when both sides eye a different target, which causes confusion.
